This Week's Writing Events: October 15 - 21
Tuesday the 17th marks the 306th birthday of Jupiter Hammond, the first published African American poet.

Born into slavery in 1711 in New York, his "An Evening Thought. Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries" was published as a broadside in 1761, followed 18 years later by “An Address to Miss Phillis Wheatley.”

His birthday has been commemorated each year since 1985 as national Black Poetry Day.
